2009 New England Patriots Fantasy Football Preview

2008 witnessed the worst possible nightmare for both fantasy owners and New England Patriots fans as QB Tom Brady went down with a torn ACL during the second series of the Patriots opener last year against the Kansas City Chiefs let everyone devastated and wondering what plan of action to take next. I was easily one owner since I chose Brady had myself. I took the 5th place in my draft and it was going to be whether Brady or Peyton Manning with the electoral (see my previous article “Early Draft RB’s: Buyer Beware to see why I go with QB’s first) and the owner of the 2nd select selected Brady leaving me with Manning at number 5 after Brady went down Matt Cassel filled in superbly after not having started a game since high school by the guidance of the Patriots to a 11-5 record despite missing the playoffs .. Cassel also helped many fantasy owners maintain Playoff runs deep at the base of his back to back 400 yard passing performances during the stretch run. Well, 2008 is behind us, children and the 2009 season is rapidly approaching , Cassel was left to the aforesaid Chiefs, Brady is expected to be back under center in New England when the Patriots open the season against Terrell Owens and the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. All reports of New England notes that Brady progressing fine, but any QB coming out of the major knee surgery is certain to be rusty as a fantasy owner that Peyton Manning had last year can attest, I have Manning last year and. was very frustrated with his lack of production as the Kinks he so to speak out (fortunately I have Chris Johnson, Matt Forte, and Calvin Johnson the storm while Manning again found his groove at once). Moreover Manning’s injury was not nearly as serious as Brady’s is the case with Brady is even On a larger note that we analyze the Patriots fantasy outlook towards the 2009 season ..

How effective will be in 2009, Brady? Any fantasy owner who drafts Brady expects his 50 TD season from 2007 to duplicate is dreams. Furthermore, as I indicated above will be rusty and Brady will be a matter of how long it will take him back to game shape. Do you really want Brady to take when it comes to him to take 4-5 weeks for the head shaking webs out? That length of time at least 1 / 3 of the fantasy season and the rest of your roster is unable to properly hold the fort down on your season can be a minute of an eye. To Brady’s defense, he still has an incredible variety of weapons for working with Randy Moss, and West Welker the prime of their careers and the performance of Pro Bowls surfaces. In addition, the team also has free agent Joey Galloway of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers already old will provide Brady with another branch when Welker and Moss received double coverage. This will be a tough call on Brady on draft day depending on how far he will fall. I think in my draft Brady will go somewhere in the 3rd round. Personally, I’m probably leaning towards passing on Brady on the basis of what I endured of Manning last year. It’s tough to playing without a QB for the first 4-5 weeks and this is what I actually had to do. In summary, Brady is obviously still an elite fantasy QB, but if you’re handy to take the risks you take if his Pro Bowl form, fate.

The Patriots running attack was much more last year than in previous years because of Brady’s knee injury. The Pats as a team together for 2278 meters the most since the Patriots Super Bowl season of 1985. To his credit the former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels orchestrated last year, an offense centered around the running game and short passing game to give Cassel the best chance of success. For the most part this philosophy as the Pats have a good season, considering the circumstances, although only fall short of the playoffs on the last week of the season. In terms of fantasy potential for the Patriots running game consists of a collection of players that will mostly serve as reserves for fantasy owners in 2009. Lawrence is a great disappointment Maroney since Coach Bill Belichick drafted him out of the 21 total University of Minnesota in the 2006 draft. To start, similar to Reggie Bush, Maroney conflict, between the suit and is essentially a sideline to sideline runner. That is when he is healthy, that’s a big core with since its inception Maroney in the NFL. Maroney has never been a full 16th played in his career games and has never rushed for 900 meters. Furthermore, he has shown a tendency to fumble not endear himself to Coach Belichick. At the time of his career in the whole impression Maroney showed his potential, but all seems to be to establish a RB to provide a secondary role on the couch and fantasy owners with unfulfilled seasons. Until he steps to prove he was a constant threat on the week to week basis, I want nothing to do with Maroney unless he falls deeply in my design. Believe me, you have nothing to do with Maroney not. Treat Maroney at best a number 3 fantasy RB and more realistically speaking, more like a number 4 or 5 RB very sparingly used only in emergency scenarios. Lack of confidence in Maroney, the Pats this off season by former Jackson Jaguar RB Fred Taylor sign. Taylor is a borderline Hall of Famer and the hunt’s all time leading rusher immediately supply the Patriots with depth in the position with Sammy Morris. Morris finished the season with a career best 727-meter and 7 TD’s and proved a valuable asset to the play off fantasy owners with his strong play. But the addition of Taylor certainly cut into Morris’ has to do not be shocked if you see that the former Texas Tech product statistics go back to what they normally are. BenJarvus Green-Ellis was also nowhere to light factor in the Patriots running game last season, but will be hard pressed to put the team in 2009 due to the addition of Taylor. Lamont Jordan, the last member of the shuffled Pats backfield Committee of ‘08 for Denver. In summary, the Patriots ball carriers will again consist of a Motley Crue cast of characters that will be with the team a fine addition to Brady’s pass attack but give none of whom you start on your fantasy team in any capacity.

In contrast to their running game the Patriots receiving corps provides fantasy owners with some very good options on a consistent basis. Moss is still a stud even though he was older. In 2007, Moss posted his best numbers of his career with the 1998 catch balls for 1493 and a record setting 23rd TD’s. Last year, Moss ‘numbers dipped, but can be attributed to 100% with Brady around. With Brady back in the fold to see Moss’ numbers go up again and continue to treat him as a reliable No. 1 fantasy wideout worthy of a choice about the early to mid 3rd round. Welker is a solid fantasy option, and based on his last two seasons have catapulted to a number of boundary 1 fantasy WR. Personally, I think Welker is just shy of the distinction and I gave him a solid No. 2 rated wide out worth the 4th-5th round, choose it would take to get him. As mentioned, the Patriots have also had Joey Galloway more Jack Daniels to add to the punch so to speak. Galloway is no doubt that his first pass, but every NFL GM’s oath that he can still run, and if true that some of the pressure on Moss and Welker who will now be a third receiver lined up with them is more than capable will be stretch the field. Galloway is worth drafting at this point in his career? It all depends on what kind of league you play in, how many rounds of your draft, and how many teams in the league. In my 12-team league Galloway CBS 18 laps in the late rounds when a flight is likely to be compiled. In most 16-team league and he will, and probably a little earlier because of the extra preparation teams involved. In short, take a chance on you if Galloway as a reserve and when I mean I reserve means it’s your 4th and 5th, or even 6 WR on your roster. He should not be started under any circumstances, even as a number 3 WR or flex player. No other receiver on the Pats roster with Sam Aiken, Greg Lewis, or anyone other than warrant design consideration of the time. , I will continue on that note when discussing the Pats TE situation. Benjamin Watson is useless as both newly acquired Alex Smith (Tampa Bay) and Chris Baker (NYJ). In short, when thinking about possible participants for your fantasy team in the coming months focusing on Brady his company of great outs rather than the TE’s and RB’s.

Stephen Gostkowski has filled the big shoes left by Adam Vinatieri beautiful and is a decent fantasy kicker. With the kicker you are looking for teams that move the ball and score a lot points. The Patiots both criteria so seriously consider designing Gostkowski came on August.

The Patriots defense for years and older Belichik know it and therefore action at the draft a few weeks ago with the selection of Darius Butler CB Connecticut and SS Patrick Chung of Oregon. There is a good chance that both of these players will start in ‘09 and they will be a tough team beat S Brandon Meriweather is a good young secondary to form. The Patriots in my estimation is a middle of the road defense that you should be able to start now and then, depending on their opponent to take. They are not by any means of an elite unit at this stage, but you can make a lot worse than good.

In the abstract, look for the Patriots star power to rebound with Brady back and many fantasy owners to help much the same way that for the last 8-9 years. Just avoid their RB’s and you would be fine. Well, it is for the AFC East. Next in my fantasy series of 2009, the AFC South and previews, I will start with the Jackson Jaguars. Until next time. Do you have a button and a smile.
