2009 New England Patriots Fantasy Football Preview
2008 witnessed the worst possible nightmare for both fantasy owners and New England Patriots fans as QB Tom Brady went down with a torn ACL during the second series of the Patriots opener last year against the Kansas City Chiefs let everyone devastated and wondering what plan of action to take next. I was easily one owner since I chose Brady had myself. I took the 5th place in my draft and it was going to be whether Brady or Peyton Manning with the electoral (see my previous article “Early Draft RB’s: Buyer Beware to see why I go with QB’s first) and the owner of the 2nd select selected Brady leaving me with Manning at number 5 after Brady went down Matt Cassel filled in superbly after not having started a game since high school by the guidance of the Patriots to a 11-5 record despite missing the playoffs .. Cassel also helped many fantasy owners maintain Playoff runs deep at the base of his back to back 400 yard passing performances during the stretch run. Well, 2008 is behind us, children and the 2009 season is rapidly approaching , Cassel was left to the aforesaid Chiefs, Brady is expected to be back under center in New England when the Patriots open the season against Terrell Owens and the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. BenJarvus Green-Ellis was also nowhere to light factor in the Patriots running game last season, but will be hard pressed to put the team in 2009 due to the addition of Taylor. Welker is a solid fantasy option, and based on his last two seasons have catapulted to a number of boundary 1 fantasy WR. Personally, I think Welker is just shy of the distinction and I gave him a solid No. 2 rated wide out worth the 4th-5th round, choose it would take to get him. As mentioned, the Patriots have also had Joey Galloway more Jack Daniels to add to the punch so to speak. Galloway is no doubt that his first pass, but every NFL GM’s oath that he can still run, and if true that some of the pressure on Moss and Welker who will now be a third receiver lined up with them is more than capable will be stretch the field. Galloway is worth drafting at this point in his career? It all depends on what kind of league you play in, how many rounds of your draft, and how many teams in the league. In my 12-team league Galloway CBS 18 laps in the late rounds when a flight is likely to be compiled.
